Audi, BMW and Mercedes have for years been fighting over who has the hottest sedan. Audi RS6, BMW M5 and the MB E63 AMG are three models that can wear down a set of tires in no time. Audis performance cars always had Quattro 4×4 but BMW and MB stayed true to rear wheel drive, until MB recently switched to 4×4 in the AMG models. Audi and MB has lately set the standard with regards to acceleration and power. RS6 Performance with 605 BHP and the new E63 AMG S 4Matic does 0-100 km/h in 3,7 and 3,4 seconds.
So the BMW M5 is lagging behind, it needs more than 4 seconds (!) to reach 100 km/h and is pure RWD. But things are changing… Recently BMW released information on the new 550i, ranking below the M5 this is still a very potent car. The 550i will do 100 km/h in 4 seconds, faster than todays M5. We all know this means that the new M5 will end up in the 3 secs range. The 550i does this thanks to a very powerful engine and xDrive helping getting the power into the ground.
But BMW, as always, puts driving pleasure up front. And driving pleasure often comes as a result of rear wheel drive and lots of power, this has always been the recipe for the M3 and M5. But don’t start crying just yet, cause BMW decided that the driver can choose between RWD and 4×4 by pushing a button. Just like in the MB E63 S 4Matic, you can switch between the modes by pulling both gear shift handles simultaniously.
The new M5 will feature the same engine as in the current model, a 4,4 litre V8. But the M-sport department managed to pull 600 BHP from it this time. This means the M5 is on par with the RS6 and the E63. Rumoours indicate around 3,5 secs on the 100 km/h. Not confirmed by BMW though…
